Method+

Each unit has a fixed factor relative to a base SI unit. Conversion = value × factor(from) / factor(to).

Temperature uses offset formulas (K, °C, °F, °R) instead of pure ratios.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why are temperatures special?+

Temperature scales are offset (°C and K share a degree size but differ by 273.15; °F and °R share a degree but use a different size). They aren't a pure multiplicative ratio so they're handled by formula.

Which gallon — US or UK?+

1 US gal ≈ 3.785 L, 1 UK (imperial) gal ≈ 4.546 L. They differ by ~20% — using the wrong one in a flow calc is a common and embarrassing error.

Is psi the same as psia?+

No. psia is absolute (referenced to vacuum); psig is gauge (referenced to atmosphere). 14.7 psia ≈ 0 psig at sea level. This tool reports unitless pressure ratios; specify absolute vs. gauge in your own context.

Does this tool support engineering notation?+

Yes — enter values like 1.5e6 and the result inherits the same magnitude. Use the unit dropdown to switch between base and engineering-scale units (MPa, kN, MJ, etc.).

Why aren't there obscure units like furlongs?+

We focus on units engineers actually use day-to-day. Email support@engineermint.com if there's an industry unit (slug, poundal, therm, etc.) you regularly need.

Are the conversion factors exact?+

Length, mass, and time-derived units are exact by SI definition. Energy/pressure conversions like 1 BTU = 1055.06 J use the IT (International Table) definition, common in HVAC and process engineering.
